Follow these steps to create your own pin darts. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><strong>Materials</strong></span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Thread – you can use multiple colors</span></li>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
<li>Straight pin – It needs to have a head but it doesn’t matter if it is flat or if it has a ball on top. Needles won't work and neither will t-pins. </li>
<li>Scissors<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9VZAZpaWZivx6Ln9uy_9HboMXQLKwZG4FeuT-haGU58BbmOrhZYHKtc04uHRRGgE1z_7BNLJkEdC4Seu_hV3ETlti6-K9U8jL24nGnruUKQWeZ6jqrNVumyRlFkDX-_UzCfjfIjrKhyD0/s1600/20140622_114054.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9VZAZpaWZivx6Ln9uy_9HboMXQLKwZG4FeuT-haGU58BbmOrhZYHKtc04uHRRGgE1z_7BNLJkEdC4Seu_hV3ETlti6-K9U8jL24nGnruUKQWeZ6jqrNVumyRlFkDX-_UzCfjfIjrKhyD0/s1600/20140622_114054.png" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
</li>
</span></ul>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><strong>Instructions </strong><br />
1. Wrap the thread around three fingers about 40 times. You can use multiple colors for a more colorful dart. If you happen to use multiple colors, don't worry about tieing the thread together -- just start wrapping the new color. <br />
<br />
2. Remove the thread from your fingers.<br />
<br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw2iYf_HaQoy2zrWVvNdToBI6pUsDgSoaqzxa9Hn0uc5y0sVKD5hK8Rlh8gdIwBgg6kaO7uIiQgeK3f8PE1lJmUUFcO9TMPj27vO7ywAXikF9UTIvtxuNjnA6ULpxpx1EouMiT6nbHKHDW/s1600/20140622_114629.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw2iYf_HaQoy2zrWVvNdToBI6pUsDgSoaqzxa9Hn0uc5y0sVKD5hK8Rlh8gdIwBgg6kaO7uIiQgeK3f8PE1lJmUUFcO9TMPj27vO7ywAXikF9UTIvtxuNjnA6ULpxpx1EouMiT6nbHKHDW/s1600/20140622_114629.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
3. Twist the loops half of a turn so it makes a figure 8. <br />
<br />
4. Pinch one of the loops so the center of the figure 8 is adjacent to your fingertips. <br />
<br />
5. Wrap the center of the figure 8 with thread 10 times.<br />
<br />

<br />
6. Push the straight pin half way through the center of the figure 8. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLtsPMn5tA4SJyQEeahYZ0kEvuuZqaSLoQqiTUvwv93G7pkozPiY07Bvoi4iWRjnifH4Mr4lz3OqBzexfddN_HBv_eEEmgS__JjaLUXo3WLuEoCfq6qWLlDX3wpitKkl6-WC3G8ZUIkjH_/s1600/20140622_114928.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLtsPMn5tA4SJyQEeahYZ0kEvuuZqaSLoQqiTUvwv93G7pkozPiY07Bvoi4iWRjnifH4Mr4lz3OqBzexfddN_HBv_eEEmgS__JjaLUXo3WLuEoCfq6qWLlDX3wpitKkl6-WC3G8ZUIkjH_/s1600/20140622_114928.png" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
7. Fold both loops of the figure 8 toward the back of the pin. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRkQ47x9PMVNlw2LM7YZd-5hc0Heplr9qIUBp4VYkL91IPnIVqaRfHNfQlXn2w7t1xbo6IJZXDC_HmXdrM7dvlQq-vcd7Dw3S9H6wevITFVteY4-XeU23he3yHyeN6VcsPXGenuVlXI1iD/s1600/20140622_115024.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRkQ47x9PMVNlw2LM7YZd-5hc0Heplr9qIUBp4VYkL91IPnIVqaRfHNfQlXn2w7t1xbo6IJZXDC_HmXdrM7dvlQq-vcd7Dw3S9H6wevITFVteY4-XeU23he3yHyeN6VcsPXGenuVlXI1iD/s1600/20140622_115024.png" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
8. Starting about 1/8” from the center of the figure 8, wrap the thread around the pin, securing the thread to the pin. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg05vxynX_42N7-Eo7Z3M2vgwpzOGRgGlJ4XvopApxYMzCZz130TgObLqDV7fYuzyd3I5NXjwDh3HQpl4SxN2U9M_vNKI5lnEdIjXHg6JyDsHW5WD1YAHow9__MQz5YIY6Mpr1ulFhoEHpa/s1600/20140622_115134.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg05vxynX_42N7-Eo7Z3M2vgwpzOGRgGlJ4XvopApxYMzCZz130TgObLqDV7fYuzyd3I5NXjwDh3HQpl4SxN2U9M_vNKI5lnEdIjXHg6JyDsHW5WD1YAHow9__MQz5YIY6Mpr1ulFhoEHpa/s1600/20140622_115134.png" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
9. Wrap the loops 20 to 40 times, depending on the look you want. Cut the thread leaving 6 inches or so for your to tie it, and then cut off the extra. <br />
<br />
10. Put your scissors through the thread loops and cut them. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0DoKFMaJBnY9CHUTUYvxgTB3tn7OqqaiykuZO4Rbnqlyo5AA8glQ2RFoWpdjmtoqfmAykLv9_3YVpEKomDvitjqU2PYfrNESMgYb_Sn3i3Sp5EgbQZuUiBgMxu5cIGJAGtFYvHqJqWagg/s1600/20140622_115350.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0DoKFMaJBnY9CHUTUYvxgTB3tn7OqqaiykuZO4Rbnqlyo5AA8glQ2RFoWpdjmtoqfmAykLv9_3YVpEKomDvitjqU2PYfrNESMgYb_Sn3i3Sp5EgbQZuUiBgMxu5cIGJAGtFYvHqJqWagg/s1600/20140622_115350.png" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
12. Straighten out the thread. The loops won't be perfect, so there will be lots of different lengths. Use the scissors to even them out. Also at this point, slide the thread back as far as possible against the head of the pin. In the photos below you can see how the pin portion becomes longer. It is easier to do step 8 if there is more of the pin to pinch while wrapping it. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
12. Put your new dart in a straw, point the straw at a bulletin board, thenblow into the straw with a short, hard, burst of air. <br />
<br />
<em>There are obvious safety issues here. Don't ever shoot darts at people or pets.</em><br />
<br />
You can make a collection in no time. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ9iN-16XSfLvaSLlD9JmI_bhH3-r8ZzZ2IJyVZMCoFt5R6MAgDmknPZtWW3Q-Eh38lfnDtXotH1aYaPZsG2YRxEvV8HtUcDaa7g8jj4WjFArOBdbxKAkB1L6YSBDXKOv_GUibNZoOGZ4-/s1600/20140621_172518.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ9iN-16XSfLvaSLlD9JmI_bhH3-r8ZzZ2IJyVZMCoFt5R6MAgDmknPZtWW3Q-Eh38lfnDtXotH1aYaPZsG2YRxEvV8HtUcDaa7g8jj4WjFArOBdbxKAkB1L6YSBDXKOv_GUibNZoOGZ4-/s1600/20140621_172518.png" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<strong>Games</strong><br />
<br />
Take 5 sticky notes and write different point values on them. Stick the notes onto a bulletin board. Everyone shoots their darts at the board. Points are awarded if they hit one of the sticky notes. Do 10 rounds. <br />
<br />
Draw a target on a piece of paper. Write point values for each circle in the target. <br />
<br />
Mark lines from varying distances from the bulletin board. If you can make the dart stick in the board from the closest line you get 1 point. From the next closest line is 2 points, etc. <br />
<br />
See how far away you can get from the board and still make the pin stick. <br />

He asked how much it would cost for him to build a launcher. I thought that with some simplifications to the design I could probably build one for $20. This post is to document how to build a compressed air rocket launcher for $20. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><strong>Simplifications</strong></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I have learned a few things from the previous launchers I have built. First, the air reservoirs don't have to be very big. It doesn't take much air to push the rockets. Larger chambers take more work to fill, which is an issue if you are using a bike pump for pressure. A smaller reservoir also means less cost in materials. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Another simplification is to use the fewest number of parts. Some launcher designs have two reservoirs. The second tank looks cool but adds no functional value. Other designs have lots of pieces to reduce the diameter of the pipes. Each piece adds extra cost. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Also, I tried to use threaded connections whenever possible. Having threaded parts makes it easier to change the launcher afterwards (or fix mistakes). </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">Finally, many designs require legs or a stand for the launcher. This makes storage harder and requires more time to build and more money to buy the additional pieces. My launcher is in a U shape so no stand or legs are necessary. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;"><strong>Construction</strong></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">Home Depot had pre-cut 2 foot sections of PVC pipe. I used a 1.25 inch pipe for the reservoir and a .5 inch pipe for the launch tube. I chose the cheapest automated valve I could find that had .75 inch couplings. Those three main parts form a U shape, with diameter reducing elbows between them. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">Here are the parts I purchased. </span><br />

</span><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Here are all of the parts laid out how they will be assembled. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1dbn7ZsO5NCIk_lYOyWM3UnBVXII2Y2uVmZ0UIxstz5_eAoD-I7vaKipVwkyY9CnQ2Yx59uwcJo7JXq6RDqarSI90cKeOxMpLZR3zfTjpsE-msAWXQ31nuYkmrUmLg5sUY1ZEAPnFyfkK/s1600/DSC02618.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1dbn7ZsO5NCIk_lYOyWM3UnBVXII2Y2uVmZ0UIxstz5_eAoD-I7vaKipVwkyY9CnQ2Yx59uwcJo7JXq6RDqarSI90cKeOxMpLZR3zfTjpsE-msAWXQ31nuYkmrUmLg5sUY1ZEAPnFyfkK/s320/DSC02618.JPG" height="240" kda="true" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"></span><div style="border: currentColor;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
<div style="border: currentColor;">
The first step was to drill a 1/4 inch hole into the end cap and we screwed the air connector piece directly into the cap. (Our launcher will be connected to a compressor. A valve stem could be place here if using a bike pump to compress the air.) Then we glued the fiew pieces together that weren't threaded. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn1D4BDTgW7WwCH74VhkSvQ1WHma5VGIj-73ZwEU3jBRD8cn-r0PhTqILKL6Uj0nbGpkZ2Pqgeo2-mwarlICpyzM0qVUDtMIWT7fRYDjtB1T8HRwnXeb0d7ELYp9msHEcTRnzivKsAXvUa/s1600/DSC02621.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn1D4BDTgW7WwCH74VhkSvQ1WHma5VGIj-73ZwEU3jBRD8cn-r0PhTqILKL6Uj0nbGpkZ2Pqgeo2-mwarlICpyzM0qVUDtMIWT7fRYDjtB1T8HRwnXeb0d7ELYp9msHEcTRnzivKsAXvUa/s320/DSC02621.JPG" height="240" kda="true" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="border: currentColor;">
</div>
</span>
<br />
<div style="border: currentColor;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Finally, we threaded in the sprinkler valve, covering the threads with teflon tape. An embossed arrow on the side of the valve indicates the direction the air should flow. The valve won't work if inserted backwards.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiMqEz-wsxwFIFIqOS-103k8wZWIJKlvUdVpQ1G6TKRDpae-N3kJXDz4PLQMyAwPk3hZkb2NuXHEWOybdH5ICI2yO_lQ3UY2ypp9gIdkvLPRtWNJeIOadswQWm7XdC6tpZRChcVSXPOP9j/s1600/DSC02648.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiMqEz-wsxwFIFIqOS-103k8wZWIJKlvUdVpQ1G6TKRDpae-N3kJXDz4PLQMyAwPk3hZkb2NuXHEWOybdH5ICI2yO_lQ3UY2ypp9gIdkvLPRtWNJeIOadswQWm7XdC6tpZRChcVSXPOP9j/s320/DSC02648.JPG" height="240" kda="true" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">At this point we had a functional launcher for less than $20. All we had to do was touch the leads of the sprinkler value to a 9 volt battery and it worked. This is functional, but not practical. So, for a few extra dollars we added a launch button. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><strong>The launch button</strong></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">We bought a small plastic box from a dollar store. From Radio Shack we purchased a push button momentary <a href="http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062539" target="_blank">switch</a> (4 switches for $3.39) and a pack of 9 volt <a href="http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062218" target="_blank">battery connectors</a> (5 for for $2.69). I drilled a quarter inch hole in the back of the case for the cord and one in the top for the button switch. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjx3nBidKequ2F6lNN974u3LYCVrUcHccDcvf3445Gz0HvoD8LbgnYEQ2DBitlQUWEQqpd6Px3D9LOd3TIUztsY4FXEHIoq9IM9yBUFhDjIAXiIdkmWbPt-dFoG729ZXb3sG9pih_IHXFb/s1600/DSC02649.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjx3nBidKequ2F6lNN974u3LYCVrUcHccDcvf3445Gz0HvoD8LbgnYEQ2DBitlQUWEQqpd6Px3D9LOd3TIUztsY4FXEHIoq9IM9yBUFhDjIAXiIdkmWbPt-dFoG729ZXb3sG9pih_IHXFb/s320/DSC02649.JPG" height="240" kda="true" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">One battery will open the valve is the sprinkler leads are connected directly to the battery. But there is more voltage drop across the long connecting cord, so two batteries are required. The 9 volt batteries are wired in series, like this. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="border: currentColor; clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB4vx7K8UZOZJNoU6tgRnv0Vx-Fi62w3u3ushS_k3BbpP4V9589mvCYDs9rEKoNVhO7R1a5vrFQdQf0aDWSuwsYNYfq9rr-WIuJxCSuEO2qIc5EDnTmuiC08JHbYguhASFCuOcOVHp6Hg7/s1600/DSC02650.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB4vx7K8UZOZJNoU6tgRnv0Vx-Fi62w3u3ushS_k3BbpP4V9589mvCYDs9rEKoNVhO7R1a5vrFQdQf0aDWSuwsYNYfq9rr-WIuJxCSuEO2qIc5EDnTmuiC08JHbYguhASFCuOcOVHp6Hg7/s200/DSC02650.JPG" height="150" kda="true" width="200" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRtoo_cbxRO5kNKiINvbwZAA_0EL-LWBVwi9gi6oFqC02BUXd7FrVynGHpvu6efrus1Ps7VLu4rahqpuxMOg_pgR70tB0IbLeNIBE2DCUfIhnNoQTSqbjRPVBBcW4rKcpljgTorembZmwd/s1600/series.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRtoo_cbxRO5kNKiINvbwZAA_0EL-LWBVwi9gi6oFqC02BUXd7FrVynGHpvu6efrus1Ps7VLu4rahqpuxMOg_pgR70tB0IbLeNIBE2DCUfIhnNoQTSqbjRPVBBcW4rKcpljgTorembZmwd/s200/series.jpg" height="200" kda="true" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I used a long phone cord to connect the button to the sprinkler valve. I tied a knot in the cord inside the box so that pulling the cord doesn't put any stress on the switch. I used an Xacto knife to expose the wires in the phone cord and then spliced one end to the valve and the other to the battery leads. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">This was our final launcher built for less than $20, and the launcher system which cost a few more dollars. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg16qAtdSo_WsvPLrjXrLQ3X1w6CR7e3UPAyUmOS5_xnGAVVD8gyCalLkDSYhyIl9cZZAvQ9o7doC5ujDk6fbFPYFC-b1e5t2p86p81CxnpEdZLKREgodfiHvy2dPorcml2DOUtam3a4zHk/s1600/DSC02624.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg16qAtdSo_WsvPLrjXrLQ3X1w6CR7e3UPAyUmOS5_xnGAVVD8gyCalLkDSYhyIl9cZZAvQ9o7doC5ujDk6fbFPYFC-b1e5t2p86p81CxnpEdZLKREgodfiHvy2dPorcml2DOUtam3a4zHk/s320/DSC02624.JPG" height="240" kda="true" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">We quickly made the rocket in the photo out of paper, a file folder, and tape just to test the launcher. We also like to launch <a href="http://cheetosummer.blogspot.com/2012/07/cheeto-cannonballs.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Cheetos!</a> When we have a function that requires a lot of rockets, we usually buy the rocket bodies from <a href="http://itsablast.com/cart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=7" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">It's a Blast</a>. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;"><strong>Further Improvements</strong></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">In this design the launcher is connected directly to an air compressor. When we actually used this launcher for an event we added a small <a href="http://www.homedepot.com/Campbell-Hausfeld/h_d1/N-25ecodZ5yc1vZ12kxZ12kyZbi/R-202796125/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">hand valve</a> so that if the launch button was held down it wouldn't drain the compressor tank. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">This launcher works great and it doesn't cost a lot of money to build. It has provided hours of entertainment. </span><br />

Hydro-priming decreases the time it takes seeds to germinate. For this experiment, we wanted to test how different concentrations of Cheetos in the water would affect the germination rates of pea seeds. Do you expect that Cheetos will help or hinder the germination of seeds? </span><br />
<br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Materials</span></strong><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For this experiment we used: </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">700 snow pea seeds</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">7 plastic cups</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">8 plastic bags</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">7 paper towels</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1 meat tenderizing mallet</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">30 Cheetos Puffs</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sharpie to label bags and cups</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A squirt bottle</span><br />
<br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Process</span></strong><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">First we labeled each of the cups as follows: Dry, 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. For each cup, we put the indicated number of Cheetos in a bag, then used a meat tenderizing mallet to smack the Cheetos into powder. We then dumped the Cheeto powder from the bag into the appropriate cup. </span><br />
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The next step was to add 1/2 cup of water to cups 0 - 10. No water was added to the cup labeled "Dry." The solutions were thoroughly mixed.</span></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEij8KcfezYKpZP1tUA2yyb-WsUU394f7Bs7f5vEP4zGqQWvwyzKNhwOzb7D6W8FbJCaH7N-SSyTrs41kZWF66bPUmHuCyZzkk4JG4EvN1epdr6MiIYjlINeDsn7nz73rdgZLTyhb08FBKCC/s1600/DSC02640.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" eda="true" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEij8KcfezYKpZP1tUA2yyb-WsUU394f7Bs7f5vEP4zGqQWvwyzKNhwOzb7D6W8FbJCaH7N-SSyTrs41kZWF66bPUmHuCyZzkk4JG4EvN1epdr6MiIYjlINeDsn7nz73rdgZLTyhb08FBKCC/s320/DSC02640.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Next, 100 snow pea seeds were added to each cup, making 700 seeds total. The seeds were stirred into the solution. We let the seeds soak overnight. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The next morning we drained and cleaned the seeds from their solutions. The dry seeds were not washed. Seven paper towels were prepared by wetting them and then wringing them dry. Each cup of seeds were spread into the center of one of the moist paper towels. The towels were folded in around the seeds and placed in a resealable plastic bag. Each bag was labeled to identify the Cheeto concentration in which the seeds had soaked. </span></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Every 12 hours the seeds were removed from the bags so we could count the number of seeds that had germinated. The germinated seeds were removed and the results were recorded. The remaining seeds were misted with a squirt bottle to keep them moist, then rewraped in the paper towel, and put back in its plastic bag. </span></div>

<br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Observations</span></strong><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The seeds that soaked in the densest concentration of Cheetos were the only seeds that germinated after 12 hours. These concentrations also germinated the highest percentage after all but one of the periods. None of the seeds that were not primed germinated after 48 hours. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It was hard to determine if a seed had germinated. We counted it if part of the root had extended from the seed. If we were to do the experiment again we would only count them if the root were a specified length. Also, since there were so many seeds that germinated between 24 and 36 hours it might have been helpful to count the seeds every 6 or 8 hours, instead of every 12. </span><br />
<br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Conclusions</span></strong><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hydro-priming definitely makes a difference. We think it is also safe to conclude that seeds primed in a solution of Cheetos germinate faster, and a higher percentage of seeds germinate compared to seeds primed in tap water. Further experimentation would be necessary to determine if the Cheeto primed seeds would be more healthy, or if the mature peas would taste like Cheetos. </span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13120565045763124203noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4048431881422106954.post-5466813169532390702012-07-24T08:52:00.003-07:002012-08-14T22:51:58.750-07:00Can Cheetos Keep a Car Afloat?<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It is impossible to do most anything now without wondering if there is some way to relate it to a Cheeto experiment. Recently we went boating on a beautiful lake. Today we tried to answer the question:</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">How many bags of Cheetos would it take to keep a Honda Fit afloat?</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A Honda Fit has a curb weight of 2423 lbs. What would be your guess? In the group of people we asked there was a low of 500 bags, and a high of 500,000, an average of 53,800, and a median of 10000 bags. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>The Experiment</strong></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To do this experiment we used a cooler, a large bag of Cheetos Puffs, two hangers, and a measuring cup. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaRoxrUzVTkddUkZpfb5xsPm6vXm31gz3RkpD5HmUN7oa_T8aOVGYqOp4kDuPNrfJJPpkMXvXw3FYG2nKJNEsj38TAR9RN4rxo2jHIh89xCn0cRqPugwsDvPwJhAemGTw-l5ttiG05iyEb/s1600/photo+(1).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" sda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaRoxrUzVTkddUkZpfb5xsPm6vXm31gz3RkpD5HmUN7oa_T8aOVGYqOp4kDuPNrfJJPpkMXvXw3FYG2nKJNEsj38TAR9RN4rxo2jHIh89xCn0cRqPugwsDvPwJhAemGTw-l5ttiG05iyEb/s320/photo+(1).JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">4. We marked the water level. <br />5. We removed the Cheetos from the water. <br />6. We measured how much water it took to fill the cooler to the mark. </span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Results</strong></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Archimedes' principle states that the upward buoyant force will be equal to the weight of the displaced water. Google helped us find the weight of a gallon of water, 8.345 lbs. It took 26 cups of water (1.625 gallons) to fill the cooler to the bandaid. 8.345 * 1.625 = 13.561 lbs. Each bag of Cheetos weighs 9.75 ounces or 0.609 lbs. To find out how much buoyancy lift each bag of Cheetos provides we will </span><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">take the total displacement weight of the bag of Cheetos minus the weight of the bag. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">13.561 - .609 = 12.952 lbs total buoyancy. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To find the total number of bags required we will take the total weight of the car, 2423 lbs, and divide the total buoyancy of one bag of Cheetos, 12.952 lbs. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2423 / 12.952 = 187.075 bags of Cheetos. Since we don't have fractional bags of Cheetos we will round up to 188 bags. </span><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">188 bags of Cheetos will float a Honda fit. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">How many bags would it take to keep your car afloat? Google "curb weight" and the name of your car. Divide the curb weight by 12.952 to figure it out. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is a simple experiment and was entertaining for everyone involved. It was easy have lots of parts for everyone to perform, and it helped to get every one's predictions first. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Now, do you think it will be possible to get Frito Lay to donate 188 bags of Cheetos so we can test our theory? Maybe Mythbusters would take on the experiment to build an actual raft with Cheetos. </span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13120565045763124203noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4048431881422106954.post-27450975889714218292012-07-19T10:50:00.002-07:002012-07-19T10:50:58.482-07:00Cheeto Conductivity<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">In this experiment we wanted to find out if Cheetos conduct electricity. </span><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">For this experiment we used a multimeter, water, and various other liquids. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The test to see if Cheetos, or anything, conducts electricity is easy - turn a multimeter to the connectivity setting (it usually has a symbol that looks like a speaker), and touch the probes of the multimeter to a different side of the thing you are testing. We touched the probes to either side of a Cheeto and quickly determined that they do not conduct electricity. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">To make the experiment a little more interesting, we wanted to determine if Cheetos resist or help the flow of electricity through water. This was our experiment. </span><br />
<ol style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<li style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">We taped the leads of our multimeter against the sides of a plastic cup. </span></li>

I've wondered if it was someones job to wear a helmet while a weight was dropped from progressively higher distances onto their head. After each impact they would be asked, "Did that hurt?" </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">In this experiment we try to answer the question, do Cheetos make an effective bike helmet? </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Many kids do an egg drop experiment in school. We figured dropping an egg would be a good helmet test. If the egg in a Cheeto helmet remained unbroken when dropped, we will assume that a head wouldn't get cracked either. We started our experiment by wrapping an egg completely in Cheetos, then wrapping the Cheetos in plastic wrap. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">We counted down 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, drop.... splat. The egg broke. We did several other drops at different heights to find the maximum distance we could drop the Cheeto helmet without the egg breaking. </span><br />

</div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">8 feet was the highest distance we could drop a helmet without the egg breaking. Using a little math and </span><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torricelli%27s_equation" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Torricelli's equation</span></a><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> we figured the velocity of an egg dropped from 8 feet. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><img alt=" v_f^2 = v_i^2 + 2 a \Delta d \," class="tex" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/math/6/3/e/63e01559f480731e85fa9d8c2af5a975.png" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; color: black; font: 13px/19px sans-serif; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; vertical-align: middle; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;" /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">"vi" in this case is 0. There is no initial velocity. </span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">"a" is acceleration. The only acceleration is gravity, 32 feet / second squared. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">"d" is the distance the helmet fell, 8 feet. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Plugging in the numbers </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">v = sqrt( 0 + 2 * 32 feet / sec^2 * 8 feet)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">v = sqrt( 512 feet ^2 / sec ^2)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">v = 22.63 feet / second</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">If the end velocity is 22.63 feet / second, how far can it go in an hour? </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">(60 seconds * 60 minutes) * ( 22.63 feet / second) / (5280 feet/mile) = 15.43 mph</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">Simplified, you can use this formula to calculate the speed in miles per hour of an object dropped from any hight "d", measured in feet: (SQRT( 64 * d) * 3600) / 5280. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">Or, here is a chart. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Our experiment shows that a Cheeto helmet can withstand an impact of 15 miles per hour. So would Cheetos make a suitable bike helmet? You would probably be alright if your head hit the ground slower than 15 miles per hour. Not only could the helmet protect your head, but imagine the fashion statement you could make in the neighborhood with a helmet made out of Cheetos. And it would be a convenient snack! This was a fun Cheeto experiment that didn't take a lot of time. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">For those wondering how bike helmets are actually tested, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mczLYloFkfk" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">here</span></a> is a video we found on YouTube that shows some actual helmet tests. They're not quite as fun, but are more practical. Perhaps we might do some accelerometer tests in the future. </span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13120565045763124203noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4048431881422106954.post-72976085003828976012012-07-07T21:06:00.000-07:002012-07-07T21:24:44.780-07:00Cheeto Cannonballs<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"></span><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">In this experiment we use Cheetos as cannonballs to figure out which angle will shoot the furthest. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">For this experiment we needed a rocket launcher, modified to shoot Cheetos Balls. There are lots of plans on the Internet for compressed air rockets, such as this one from </span><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNFfK5uo6D0" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Kip Kay</span></a><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> and Make Magazine. We built ours out of 3" pipe in a U shape. Instead of gluing most of the pieces, we opted to use threaded connections that would allow us to change the angle of the launch without repositioning the entire launcher. We added a larger piece of PVC pipe on the end that a Cheetos Balls could fit in - since they wouldn't fit in the 1/2 inch pipe used for launching rockets. </span><br />

We didn't measure how far the Cheetos traveled, only how far they went down the center line, and their offset. To determine which Cheeto went the furthest, we needed to use a little math. We had two sides of a right triangle, A and B. </span><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pythagoras" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Pythagoras</span></a><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> came up with the equation to find the length of side C: A squared + B squared = C squared. <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Why didn't each Cheeto land in the same place if shot at the same angle with the same pressure? There was a slight breeze, which might have helped some Cheetos and hindered others. Also, though we tried to always fill the launcher to 20 lbs, there could have been variations.</span></div>

In this project we made a plaster mold using the plastic mold we make previously. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">For this project we used the following materials: </span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">File folders (Dad's go to craft supply)</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Molding plaster powder</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Duct tape</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Plastic mold</span></li>
</ul>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The first step of this project was to create a circular cylinder in which we could pour the plaster. We cut strips 2 inches wided out of the file folders and wrapped them around a peanut butter jar. We made two just for added strength, and wrapped one around the other. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Then we used duct tape and taped the file folder cylinders to the plastic cheeto mold. We coated the mold with a quick shot of cooking non-stick spray to help separate it from the plaster later on. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">We eyeballed enough plaster powder into a paper cup and mixed in enough water until the plaster was the consistency of pancake batter, and poured it into our mold. Then we let the mold sit for about an hour. </span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">When the paster was hard, we removed it from the mold. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguN0pUSjsPfeACAVm12BNeJDUQvo0rn64-QRXnBmxBnANRl9QJS4ibhEqk_Wtm6zvtRYJRTBcI4cZcP2snlW60atEAwj8S1DCNNPuCH675QIGnZyqWklGqMxmQsJ-raEnlaG-MukmiFS1B/s1600/DSC02575.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguN0pUSjsPfeACAVm12BNeJDUQvo0rn64-QRXnBmxBnANRl9QJS4ibhEqk_Wtm6zvtRYJRTBcI4cZcP2snlW60atEAwj8S1DCNNPuCH675QIGnZyqWklGqMxmQsJ-raEnlaG-MukmiFS1B/s320/DSC02575.JPG" vca="true" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Last of all we painted the plaster with acrylic paint. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDyww9ZK5ILmXeySCITPQBdOZBzdNUOoolC2hzcuCg0F6bbz9cp_BhEB1gu20iB8lNwhRHFPhLXB29zArGaj649Jy5CRx5jHg0k_tj931Kt1_b1fwq01VJhdshNt1THMQV72Asb0sAt3Lt/s1600/DSC02582.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" sca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDyww9ZK5ILmXeySCITPQBdOZBzdNUOoolC2hzcuCg0F6bbz9cp_BhEB1gu20iB8lNwhRHFPhLXB29zArGaj649Jy5CRx5jHg0k_tj931Kt1_b1fwq01VJhdshNt1THMQV72Asb0sAt3Lt/s320/DSC02582.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">This was a fun project. If we were to do it again we would make a few modificaitons. First, we wouldn't have used so much plaster. It is much thicker than it needs to be. This just adds extra weight without being very useful. Also, the file folders weren't such a good idea. They got soggy and didn't make a good edge for the plaster. It would have been better to coat the inside of the file folders with duct tape before taping it to the plastic form. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">We have also decided that we could make smaller cylinders and make Christmas tree ornaments of the Cheeto mold. Then we could have a Cheeto Christmas to complement our Cheeto Summer of Fun. </span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13120565045763124203noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4048431881422106954.post-85082990371143804712012-07-02T09:54:00.001-07:002012-07-08T21:27:00.241-07:00Cheeto Plastic Mold<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"></span><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Suppose you found the perfect Cheeto and wanted to preserve it. We decided we would experiment with plastic molds and make a vacuum mold of a Cheeto. We got the idea from two of our favorite project sources: </span><a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-Your-Own-Prototypes-%3A-How-to-make-your/" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Instructables</span></a><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> and </span><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5CGfoxnKaQ" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Kip Kay</span></a><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">For this experiment we started with: </span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">A plastic peanut butter jar</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">An empty soda bottle</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">An empty plastic milk </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Duct tape</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">A piece of wood larger than the peanut butter lid</span></li>
</ul>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">To start our project, we drilled holes in the top of the peanut butter jar lid. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmQ8B6-p74EtkHOBRIEY2P_vX3R7iENf0U-8MzB5Ib8Vk_y2jN3gO8tEiUuTi6Uf6W5hyphenhyphen-NGoz68gJCwkOu7Ys1OT1ku-rLHRMGqslQeu0MTiFUOapy0cFr1-zhsrfE56c2eGbxHO7cl0q/s1600/DSC02561.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmQ8B6-p74EtkHOBRIEY2P_vX3R7iENf0U-8MzB5Ib8Vk_y2jN3gO8tEiUuTi6Uf6W5hyphenhyphen-NGoz68gJCwkOu7Ys1OT1ku-rLHRMGqslQeu0MTiFUOapy0cFr1-zhsrfE56c2eGbxHO7cl0q/s320/DSC02561.JPG" vca="true" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">We drilled lots of holes until there were holes over the whole surface. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">We cut the top off a coke bottle. This makes a good funnel that will make it easier to connect the vacuum. Then we traced the bottle top onto the side of the peanut butter jar and cut a hole and cut well inside the line. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Next we found a piece of wood that was bigger than the peanut butter jar lid. We traced the lid on the wood, and cut the hole out. Then we cut a side off of a plastic gallon milk jug and stapled it over the hole. (We used a staple gun not a paper stapler.) </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">We put a Cheeto on top of the peanut butter jar, then put the plastic in the oven at 300 degrees four about 2 minutes. The plastic started to melt and burn at that point. We took the plastic out of the oven and placed it on top of the Cheeto and peanut butter jar and turned on the vacuum. The plastic was sucked down around the Cheeto to form a mold. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Here was our final mold preserving the perfect Cheeto. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqZkQQtVDFJlw1u6FQyNqZiVocfnLl5o_5A8HoKxsvREdHdLbL-WbqlLzaO6lTPWTUBtS-bUQ9mKlWXYslc5lUxQXLXmeLw41DLOrJ9y8R_og8V1LQRuny_fErdUAPaI41oWfec0NddmqZ/s1600/DSC02571.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqZkQQtVDFJlw1u6FQyNqZiVocfnLl5o_5A8HoKxsvREdHdLbL-WbqlLzaO6lTPWTUBtS-bUQ9mKlWXYslc5lUxQXLXmeLw41DLOrJ9y8R_og8V1LQRuny_fErdUAPaI41oWfec0NddmqZ/s320/DSC02571.JPG" vca="true" width="240" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">If we were to to do the project again we wouldn't have made quite so many holes in the top of the lid, and we would have made the holes cleaner. Our mold is bumpy around the Cheeto because of many of the holes touched each other, ripping the plastic and making the surface bumpy. We would also use a </span><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004NDX7O6?ie=UTF8&camp=213733&creative=393185&creativeASIN=B004NDX7O6&linkCode=shr&tag=wwwmyneolisti-20&keywords=heat%20gun&qid=1341174951&ref_=sr_1_4&sr=8-4" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">heat gun</span></a><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> rather than putting the plastic in the oven. We could have used the heat gun to reheat the plastic while it was over the Cheeto to get cleaner and more defined edges.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">What can be done with a Cheeto with the mold? </span></span><br />

You are at a picnic enjoying Cheetos. With no place to wipe your Cheeto fingers, you wipe them on your shirt. The question we try to answer in this experiment is, do Cheetos make an effective sunblock? Does wiping your fingers on your shirt increase the sunblock protection of the shirt? </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">To do this experiment, we first ground up some Cheetos into a powder. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPFB4eyQpqFl6plAPkSx2ynWU5ErRPMrGxDVej8UvqJnXNNd8t_10CfgbZgrUelkXcA4qA49vEV7V9ub1AfMK9A6PnKoGG8hXHNxm4VEUq6jKWlLYWlReHLigsEYmCZXFfhWWuRLAHRZJu/s1600/DSC02555.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPFB4eyQpqFl6plAPkSx2ynWU5ErRPMrGxDVej8UvqJnXNNd8t_10CfgbZgrUelkXcA4qA49vEV7V9ub1AfMK9A6PnKoGG8hXHNxm4VEUq6jKWlLYWlReHLigsEYmCZXFfhWWuRLAHRZJu/s320/DSC02555.JPG" vca="true" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Then we took the Cheeto powder, some 50 SPF sunblock, and some towels and headed to the back yard. We exposed our stomachs to the sun and put a strip of sunblock and a stripe of cheeto powder. </span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifl-rz8lic0s5bhGa3p11NbWmaxcXxpufqr06jM1UYewJfznGPT0Eko5nWG0KpIgojcb5t0o0sUjXX7Q6BmpDRVgCsgxUkBQLgnNj5CiVX2P81pnyWU8XKQz38p3w2GHka5BglBbmjCdZ7/s1600/cheetosun2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="220" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifl-rz8lic0s5bhGa3p11NbWmaxcXxpufqr06jM1UYewJfznGPT0Eko5nWG0KpIgojcb5t0o0sUjXX7Q6BmpDRVgCsgxUkBQLgnNj5CiVX2P81pnyWU8XKQz38p3w2GHka5BglBbmjCdZ7/s320/cheetosun2.jpg" vca="true" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">We tanned in the sun for 20 minutes. It is 97 degrees (36.6 C) outside. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Observations: Sister's skin was the most sensitive. After 20 minutes her face and belly were red. The stripe of sunblock was clearly visible. The Cheeto stripe looked more like reverse freckles where the thicker specks of cheeto dust had been. Dad and Brother did not have significant coloring in that time, and only the faint line of sunblock was visible. (Brother almost didn't make it the 20 minutes in the sun. He summed up his the experience commenting, "I'm dying to death!")</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">Conclusion: Cheetos do not make good sunblock unless you like a pokadot tan. But they do make great treats as you are passing the time in the sun. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">Update: As we were getting ready for bed we were again comparing outcomes. The color had set in with time, and we all had red bellies. All of us had a pronounced line where the SPF 50 sunblock had been, and a less pronounced spotty line where the cheetos had been. We were suprised how red we all were after just 20 minutes in the sun. So if you are at a picknic or at the pool and don't have sunblock, smear yourself in Cheetos. It is definitely better than being unprotected. </span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13120565045763124203noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4048431881422106954.post-90394628317843231672012-06-20T21:50:00.000-07:002012-07-06T08:29:25.234-07:00Cheetos as a Bullet Proof Vest<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"></span><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">All Ralphie Parker wanted for Christmas was a Red Ryder, carbine-action, 200 shot range model air rifle. "You'll shoot your eye out" was all anyone ever replied. BB guns can be dangerous. </span><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Like Ralphie, dad received a Red Ryder BB gun when he was a kid. In this experiment we are going to test a way to make BB guns safer. We ask the question - how many Cheetos does it take to stop a BB? </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">For the first part of our experiment, we wanted to know how fast the BBs are traveling when shot. This would help us establish their momentum. (Momentum is velocity x mass.) </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">We thought of several ways we could test for the speed. </span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">We could shoot the BB through two laser beams. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">We could shoot the BB straight into the air and time how long it takes to land. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">We could shoot a BB at a mobile police radar unit that warns drivers of their speed. </span></li>
</ul>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">We decided that we could use sound instead. We measured 10 feet from a fence, then recorded shooting a BB at the fence. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDORZIjBV9OG5itITCKsnr8uOPfrWwtm5LXzVU3VsKgPl1_RoMK6rw2YwEzoY6D-2_jkK_PjURfNbazi9STk0ghCYlYtC5JORoYazq3QdzwrLJ2FWy7BifkaxEptUv1TwVV5-P1ijf1pTB/s1600/bullet1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="212" rca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDORZIjBV9OG5itITCKsnr8uOPfrWwtm5LXzVU3VsKgPl1_RoMK6rw2YwEzoY6D-2_jkK_PjURfNbazi9STk0ghCYlYtC5JORoYazq3QdzwrLJ2FWy7BifkaxEptUv1TwVV5-P1ijf1pTB/s320/bullet1.jpg" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">We used a program called Audacity to measure the time difference between the sound of the gun firing and the sound of the BB hitting the fence. It was 0.07 seconds. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">There are 5280 feet in a mile, so it would take a BB ((5280 / 10) * 0.07 = ) 36.96 seconds to go a mile. To get miles per house we take 60 seconds/minute * 60 mintues/hour = 3600, and divide that by 36.96 seconds. The total (3600 / 36.96) is 97.4 miles/hour. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">A BB is 5.23 </span><a href="http://www.crosman.com/gear/ammo/0767" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">grains</span></a><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">, which is .01 ounces. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Next, we pinched a row of Cheetos between two kabob skewers. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We approached our empty driveway canvas with a bowlful of Cheetos and a headful of ideas. We set to work drawing...</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">Then we took some duct tape and put cheetos on it. We learned from our last experiment that Cheetos Puffs really don't stack nicely, so we tried cutting the cheetos into straight pieces. This gave us smaller gaps between the Cheetos. </span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">Since the can had been out of the fridge for a while as we wrapped our Cheeto insulation around it, we put the can back in the fridge for 30 minutes to let it cool back down. <br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">For the last part of the experiment we put a can in a foam can holder designed for the purpose of keeping cans cool. We expected this to work the best. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFSWk-qVGcc22FkmTpSUWawNxuMT7hxX3D69SELW7FVxE9uHAoeb86GV8liG8u069h5PH8NepZ6EiToVRdGCHdihOkUqlLrWdZO3n3JtGkoMbSFEShlV203dQ3MD6riA5ygrosD-OMnKF8/s1600/insulated_can.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" pca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFSWk-qVGcc22FkmTpSUWawNxuMT7hxX3D69SELW7FVxE9uHAoeb86GV8liG8u069h5PH8NepZ6EiToVRdGCHdihOkUqlLrWdZO3n3JtGkoMbSFEShlV203dQ3MD6riA5ygrosD-OMnKF8/s200/insulated_can.jpg" width="148" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">During the first 10 minutes of all of the experiments the temperature of the soda fluctuated up and down. We think this had to do with the carbon dioxide bubbles being released from the soda. (If we were to do the experiment again we would use plain water.)</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">This charts shows our measurements of the temperature rising over time. </span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">Amazingly enough, the Cheetos were the best insulator with the soda rising only 3.2 degrees. The soda in the foam can insulator rose 3.7 degrees, and the plain can rose 4.4 degrees farenheit. </span></span><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">So the next time you want to keep your soda cold, make sure you have a handful of Cheetos. </span></div>

<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Why yes, yes they do. They burn quite well, actually. If you ever have to start a fire with only one match, light a Cheeto first. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">We wanted to get an idea if being flammable was only a property of Cheetos, so we tried burning several other types of chips. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">We started by burning Cheetos Puffs. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We even burned Doritos - about all of the "itos" we could find. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We had a few observations. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">1. While all of the chips burned well, the Doritos burned the best. We think this is because the chips are bigger, and there is a greater surface area to mass ratio. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">2. The Crispy Cheetos were the hardest to light on fire. They have the lowest surface area to mass ratio of the chips we burned. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">3. There was a yellowish liquid that dripped from all of the chips except the Cheetos Puffs. We weren't sure what it was until we washed cookie sheet we were using as a fire pan, and discovered it to be oil. We think the fire melted the oil, and it was able to drop out of the chip before the fire consumed it. </span><br />
<br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Finally, we wanted to utilize our new found knowlege. We decided to have a camp fire and roast hot dogs for dinner. </span></div>

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Quite a fire from just a few Cheetos Puffs, plenty to roast the hot dogs. Once the fire was going we noticed that even the Cheetos Puffs were exuding oil. We thought that perhaps the texture of the puffs makes it harder for the oil to excape, so it takes a larger fire. </span></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana;">This was a fun experiment. We learned you can eat your Cheetos and cook with them too!</span></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13120565045763124203noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4048431881422106954.post-24911087846657749872012-06-05T19:04:00.001-07:002012-08-30T21:39:59.376-07:00What's the deal with Cheetos?<br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As we were finishing the school year we had a discussion as a family what we could do to make the summer both fun and interesting. We happened to be eating Cheetos at the time, and we started thinking of all of the experiments and crafts we could do with them. This blog documents our efforts. Let the Cheeto Summer of Fun BEGIN!!</span><br />
